A former West Yorkshire Police officer is due to make his first appearance in court today charged with three counts of misconduct in public office, following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

A hearing for former PC Declan Middleton, who was assigned to the Bradford District Safeguarding Domestic Abuse Team, is due to take place at Leeds Magistrates Court on Thursday 1st June.

Between May 2020 and October 2021, ex-PC Middleton is alleged to have started an inappropriate relationship with a woman he met and attempted to pursue relationships with two other women during the course of his duties.

The IOPC began their investigation in January 2021, following a referral from WYP, who had been contacted by a woman making a complaint. In March 2022, the police watchdog completed their investigation and sent a final report and file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, whom authorised the charges.

UPDATE: Today’s Leeds Magistrates’ Court hearing for Declan Middleton, 31, did not show up on the listing service website, Courtserve, but, in the event, he did make a brief appearance before District Judge David Kitson. The case was remitted to the neighbouring Leeds Crown Court for its next hearing on 29th June, 2023.

Middleton, who gave the court an address in Thwaites, Keighley, was granted unconditional bail.
