A Bradford police officer could be dismissed after he allegedly lied to avoid a speeding ticket and disregarded a ban from driving police vehicles.

West Yorkshire Police say the ban was imposed on Police Constable 1856 Gavin Smith in December 2021 after activating blue lights without authorisation, on multiple occasions, whilst on duty.

The force also say that PC Smith was caught speeding in a marked police vehicle when he was on duty. The resultant speeding ticket was cancelled after PC Smith told the force he had been driving at high speed to stop a suspect who was driving erratically after running through a red light.

But WYP say the officer “provided information knowing it to be untrue in order to have his speeding ticket cancelled”.

As a result, PC Smith has been charged with gross misconduct and he faces a four-day disciplinary hearing, beginning on Monday 31st July, 2023 at Force HQ.
