Court lists published for today, Wednesday 9th August, 2023 show that Raja Miah, 50, unemployed and resident in Stamford Street, Mossley will appear in Court 5 at Bolton Magistrates’ Court at 9.30am.
Miah, who will surrender conditional court bail before the hearing, is facing a charge of harassing a 40 year old female lawyer from the Salford area. He pleaded not guilty at a hearing in Tameside Magistrates’ Court in February, 2022 at which the complainant was granted anonymity.
He was arrested by Greater Manchester Police in a dawn raid at his home on 21st July, 2021, meaning the case has now entered its third year.
A two day trial listed for 2nd and 3rd February, 2023 in Manchester Magistrates’ Court was vacated and replaced by today’s session which has been variously described by court officials as a pre-trial or case progression hearing. What is not in dispute is that it is a day of legal argument with any witness not required to attend.
A previous two day trial fixture, in August, 2022 was also adjourned following an application by the defendant that would allow him to replace his lawyers who had excused themselves a few days prior to that hearing.
This will be the eleventh time Raja Miah appears in the dock in these proceedings, heard in four court centres across the Greater Manchester region, taking in today’s Bolton hearing, the aforementioned Manchester and Tameside – and including a visit to Wigan Magistrates’ Court in December, 2022.
That hearing count is believed to be comfortably a record in a harassment without violence prosecution in the Region.
