A Greater Manchester Police officer, PC Raja Yousaf, has been sentenced to four months in jail for perverting the course of justice after he falsely claimed, to evade driving offences, that his vehicle’s number plates had been stolen.
In July 2021, PC Yousaf was spotted driving at high speed in Oldham, his home town, by a police patrol. Despite attempts by officers to stop him, using emergency equipment, he continued driving. Approximately 20 minutes after the incident, PC Yousaf reported that his vehicle registration plates had been stolen.
Two months later, PC Yousaf was questioned under caution at Oldham police station and denied being in the car during the incident, claiming he was in Stockport at the time. However, a mobile phone tracking investigation revealed that he had been in Oldham on the night in question, contradicting his statement.
Following the investigation, PC Yousaf was suspended from duty in GMP’s Tameside district in June 2022. He was subsequently sentenced to four months in jail at Liverpool Crown Court.
Additionally, a force spokesperson says that he will face internal disciplinary proceedings within GMP, paused pending the outcome of the criminal trial.
Cases of perverting the course of justice can have significant repercussions on public trust in law enforcement, as they undermine the integrity of the justice system.
Greater Manchester Police’s chief constable, Stephen Watson, says his force remains committed to rooting out corrupt officers.
