A notice published late last week on the South Yorkshire Police website provides details of an accelerated misconduct hearing set to take place on Wednesday 13th September, 2023, involving PC 3424 Dhanni Smith.

It is alleged that, in October 2022, the officer went on holiday, out of the country, without leave being authorised and was dishonest with supervisors whilst requesting leave and after his return to work.

These are breaches of the Standards of Professional Behaviour in respect of Discreditable Conduct, Honesty & Integrity, Duties & Responsibilities and Orders & Instructions.

The matters set out above are breaches of the Standards which are so serious as to justify dismissal and therefore constitute Gross Misconduct.

The hearing will take place at The Professional Standards Department, South Yorkshire Police, Churchill Way, Chapeltown, Sheffield S35 2PY and is listed to start at 2pm. Only pre-authorised members of the public (and press) are permitted to attend.

Misconduct Hearings are held to present the facts of a case and allow officers the opportunity to explain their conduct and the circumstances surrounding an allegation. Witnesses may also be called to give evidence. The purpose of a Public Hearing is to show that the police disciplinary system is open and transparent and holds officers in breach of acceptable Standards of Professional Behaviour, or those that found guilty of misconduct, accountable for their actions.

Hearings are public unless the person chairing the hearing decides to exclude the public from part or all of a sitting.

SYP has not released details as to whom will be chairing this week’s hearing.

Since 1st January 2022, SYP has held eighteen Misconduct Hearings, 83% of which were in public.
