A misconduct hearing opens at British Transport Police regional HQ in York this morning (18th March, 2024) and is set to last four days.

A three person Panel, led by a Legally Qualified Chair (as yet, un-named by the force), will hear the following allegations against Sgt Tanya Rickard:

Standards of professional behavior that have allegedly been breached

  • Authority, respect and courtesy
  • Use of force
  • Confidentiality
  • Conduct

Circumstances of Alleged Breaches

On the 18th November 2022, whilst interacting with Ms A in the proximity of Newcastle Central Railway Station, PS Rickard behaved in a manner which was unprofessional and discourteous by using inappropriate language towards Ms A.

It is also alleged that PS Rickard used force on Ms A’s neck and throat area,

The level of force used was not necessary, proportionate or reasonable given the circumstances.

It is further alleged that following the serving of the Notice of Investigation on 4th January 2023 in relation to a complaint made on behalf of Ms A.

PS Rickard attempted to influence and/or interfere with the criminal investigation concerning Ms A.

The length of hearing strongly implies that Sgt Rickard will deny the allegations and be legally represented. If found guilty of the allegations, and gross misconduct is proved, one of the sanctions available to the Panel is dismissal without notice.
