A Leeds man, who posted images on-line in support of Hamas, pleaded guilty yesterday (8th March, 2024) to an offence under the Terrorism Act, 2000.

Hamas is an acronym of its official name, Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya, a Palestinian Sunni Islamist political and military movement governing parts of the occupied Gaza Strip

West Yorkshire Police say Ozain Yousef, 23, of Mexborough Place, Leeds, was arrested on 24th November, 2023 on suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation.

Evidence was seized from his phone linking him to a Twitter social media account under the name ‘Mr Ozain’.

The police confirm that he was later charged with one terrorism offence in relation to to a series of social media posts he had shared online.

They included images of Hamas soldiers, describing himself a “brother” of the proscribed organisation, and a clip of fighting between Hamas soldiers and the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), an image of a sniper, and a picture appearing to show a Hamas soldier carrying out an execution, together with the caption “sleep tight”.

On Friday, Yousef pleaded guilty to the offence at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and he will be sentenced on 9th April, 2024.

The presiding judge warned Yousef: “This may result in a sentence of imprisonment.”
