In a short notice posted on their website, more noteworthy for what it doesn’t say, West Yorkshire Police have announced that a former officer, ex-PC 5012 Sophie Brown is expected to attend a misconduct hearing for allegedly breaching the Standards of Professional Behaviour in relation to:
- Authority, Respect & Courtesy
- Equality & Diversity
- Discreditable Conduct.
It is alleged that former PC Brown was involved in a text message conversation where she has discussed and was involved in sending third parties abusive and offensive messages, making multiple calls and posting abusive and offensive messages and private images on the internet. It is alleged that she was involved in the creation of an advert concerning a third party on Viva Street, which is a free to view sex chatline/ escort site.
It is further alleged that former PC Brown exchanged messages which were deemed to be offensive, derogatory and discriminatory.
The hearing will take place at WYP HQ in Wakefield on 3rd and 4th April, 2024.
What the notice doesn’t say is: When the incidents described took place; was the officer on or off duty; how and when they were discovered/reported; when did PC Brown (as she was then) leave the force; did she face any criminal investigation?
Having already left the force, the proceedings have a hollow ring to them. But it is a part of a disciplinary process that, under Police Regulations, must be taken to its conclusion.
It is expected that the Panel will rule, if the evidence shows that gross misconduct is proven, that PC Brown would have been dismissed without notice had she not resigned.
However, a two day hearing might imply that the allegations are to be defended and ex-PC Brown legally represented in these proceedings
