Following a ten week trial, a jury at Preston Crown Court has found Eleanor Williams, aged 22 and from Walney, Barrow-in-Furness, guilty of eight counts of perverting the course of justice.
They deliberated for less than three hours. The verdict was unanimous.
Sentencing will take place before the trial judge, HHJ Robert Altham, the Honorary Recorder of Preston, on 13th and 14th March, 2022.
Jonathan Sandiford KC has led the prosecution team; Louise Blackwell KC led for the defence.
Miss Williams, under Sentencing Council guidelines, and given the nature of the evidence heard against her, faces a lengthy term in prison.
The court heard she had lied about being trafficked by an Asian grooming gang in locations as diverse as Blackpool, Ibiza and Amsterdam, and making false rape allegations against a series of white men. A large number of other girls and women in Barrow, whom Ellie Williams claimed were being groomed and/or raped, came to court to deny those assertions or say they didn’t know, or had never heard of, Miss Williams.
She has been held on remand for the past two years for which she will receive credit when sentence is passed.
The ramifications of the trial will impact across the Greater Manchester Region as a JusticeForEllie social media campaign was heavily supported by Manchester-based child sexual exploitation (CSE) campaigner, Maggie Oliver, and a number of prominent Oldham CSE campaigners, Cllrs Robert Barnes and Lewis Quigg, Paul Errock, Debbie Barratt Cole, John Lawrence, Julie Heywood, Kerry Skelhorn (known on social media as “Rocky Skelshaw“) and a CSE victim/survivor who is widely known by her cypher, ‘Sophie’.
All are wedded to a ‘cover-up’ conspiracy that alleges, without evidence, Labour Party politicians in Oldham, in concert with Greater Manchester Police, the Mayor, safeguarding partners and paid council officers, are covering up CSE in return for Asian block votes at local and general elections.
Miss Williams’ mother, Cllr Allison Johnston, is a Labour politician who sits on Borough of Barrow-in-Furness Council.
Simon Fell, the Conservative MP for Barrow and Furness, said the false claims by Ellie Williams had “provided fuel” for a Leeds-based far-right group, Patriotic Alternative, to start campaigning in his constituency. The same group has also been active in the Oldham area within the past six months, distributing leaflets in the Royton South ward of the present Council Leader, Cllr Amanda Chadderton.
According to notorious Tameside-based conspiracy theorist, Oldham was one of the towns into which Ellie Williams claimed she was trafficked and raped, although that didn’t feature in evidence heard at Preston Crown Court. His main claim to fame is that he is widely known as the Region’s most persistent, mendacious liar with a troubling propensity for violent fantasies (read more here).
