Following their defection from the Labour Party in April (read more here), 2024 two experienced councillors have joined independents, The Oldham Group (TOG).

TOG founder and Leader, Cllr Kamran Ghafoor (pictured above), says:
“It is pleasing to announce that Cllrs Shoab Akhtar and Nyla Ibrahim have now joined our Party. They bring a wealth of political experience and local knowledge to the table. These welcome additions bring our present total of councillors to eight but this, of course, may not be the end of our recruitment during this political year as the Labour Party continues to suffer from considerable internal turmoil”.
Cllr Akhtar, a former Cabinet Member who has served the Council for over 20 years, and Cllr Ibrahim both represent the Werneth ward.
The political composition of Oldham Council’s 60 seats now stands at Labour 27, Liberal Democrats 9, The Oldham Group 8, Conservatives 8, Failsworth Independent Party (FIP) 2, Royton Independents 2, Shaw and Crompton Independents (S&CI) 2, independents 2.
Labour was able to form a minority administration at the recent Annual General Meeting after promised support for a ‘rainbow coalition’, including public statements, did not materialise from FIP and S&CI.
A fragile alliance that is not expected to last very long (read more here).
