A West Yorkshire Police officer pleaded not guilty to two charges of misconduct in a public office at a plea and case management hearing at Leeds Crown Court earlier today.

The allegations relate to contact with vulnerable persons and commencing a sexual relationship with one of them.

Detective Constable Wasim Bashir, 54, who lives at an address in the Poplars Park area of Bradford and works in the city’s District CID, is alleged to have approached victims of serious sexual crimes or domestic abuse during the course of his duties without any identified policing purpose.

The alleged offences by DC Bashir are said to have taken place between 2019 and 2022.

He was charged by WYP after an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and a subsequent referral to the Crown Prosecution Service. The case was remitted to Crown Court by Hull Magistrates’ Court on 3rd July.

At today’s hearing, HHJ Penelope Belcher fixed a trial date for 9th February, 2026 in the same court.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed that the long-serving detective was currently suspended from duty.
