Police say ‘no misconduct and no complaints’ arising from ‘excessive force’ video

Following a request made to Greater Manchester Police on Monday 2nd January, 2023 a statement has been issued in response to a video circulating on social media that appeared to show excessive force being used on a detained suspect (read more here).

“At around 11pm on Friday 30 December 2022, officers were called to reports of a male suspected of dealing drugs on Horsedge Street, Oldham.

A man in his 30’s was detained for a stop search and later arrested on suspicion of 3 x assault emergency worker, Possession with Intent to Supply class A and racial aggravated public order.

Following review of the Body Worn Video footage – no misconduct has been found and no complaints have been submitted”.

Superintendent Phil Hutchinson of GMP’s Oldham District added: “Police officers in Greater Manchester are committed to keeping the public safe from harm, we endeavour to respond to all reports to protect the communities we serve. This was no different.”

The video appeared to show at least one officer punching the suspect whilst he was held on the ground. Distraction strikes are a permitted tactic under College of Policing guidelines.
