On 2nd January 2024, a misconduct hearing under the Police (Conduct) Regulations 2020 will take place in relation to Police Sergeant 2789 David McDonald at West Yorkshire Police’s Force Headquarters in Wakefield.

It is alleged that PS McDonald has breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour for police officers, specifically:

  1. Authority, Respect and Courtesy,
  2. Equality and Diversity, and
  3. Discreditable Conduct.

It is alleged that, on a number of occasions in 2021 and 2022, whilst on duty in West Yorkshire, PS McDonald made comments towards a police officer colleague that were homophobic and grossly offensive.

And it is contended that (if proven) the allegations amount to gross misconduct. If such a finding is made by the Panel one of the sanctions available to them is dismissal without notice.

The force in an announcement on its website say that hearing will be in public, but attendance at the hearing is subject to conditions set out in a separate Order dated 3rd August 2023 made by the Legally Qualified Chair (LQC), Adrian Phillips
