With the controversy over the arrest and bailing of an elected Member of Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council over suspicions of rape (read more here and here) growing ever louder, the Political Secretary of the local Liberal Democrat Group, Cllr Mark Kenyon, has released the following statement:
“As a result of information published in the local and regional press, we are aware that a male Oldham Borough Councillor has been arrested by Greater Manchester Police as a result of an allegation of rape of a female and is currently on police bail.
“We can confirm this individual is NOT a Liberal Democrat councillor, and we have received no notification from Oldham Council, or any other body, as to the person’s identity or any proposed actions in relation to the individual concerned or actions the councillor’s political group have taken or intend to take”.
Two independent councillors were named yesterday on Neil Wilby Media as also NOT having anything whatsoever to do with allegations and a statement is expected later today from one of the other political parties represented on Oldham Council along much the same lines as that of the Liberal Democrats.
There are 39 male councillors in Oldham: 2 are independents, 3 represent Failsworth Independent Party, 6 represent the Liberal Democrats, 7 represent the Conservative Party and 21 represent the ruling Labour Party. As things stand, with the independents and LibDems now ruled out, 30 male councillors remain falsely under suspicion. A situation that most right-thinking people would say is both manifestly unfair and unsustainable.
